The Design edition
The AI news of that week, in plain language.
This week: design tools that let you create by having a conversation, photos that turn into 3D spaces on their own, and a clear-eyed look at what AI actually is.
Canva now lets you design simply by talking
Describe your idea, and the AI turns it into a design you can then tweak to your liking.
Canva AI 2.0 is rolling out further. You can now create a design through a conversation: you describe in words what you want, and the tool produces a fully editable result with separate layers. The tool can also connect to Gmail, Slack and Zoom to set up content automatically. Canva is now the third most used AI platform in the world, with more than a quarter of a billion people using it every month.
Background for subscribersUse this for the tedious groundwork: a first draft of a social post, the start of a moodboard, or a presentation slide. Because everything stays editable and layered, you can apply your own style on top. Think of it as a diligent intern who lays the foundation, and then you add the finishing touch. You save time on work that only needs to be 80 per cent right anyway, and you keep time free for the real craft.
Adobe Wonder: from a single photo to a 3D world you can walk through
Adobe Research and Johns Hopkins University have shown off Wonder: an AI that turns a photo or video into a 3D space you can explore in six directions. This lets you create a virtual tour or an interactive product demo without expensive 3D modelling work. The technology is still in the research phase.
