The Office management edition
The AI news of that week, in plain language.
This week: letting AI manage calendars, deepfake fraud that starts in your inbox, and why you'll miss Google Assistant sooner than you think.
Deepfake fraud often starts in your inbox: one phone call can prevent a costly mistake
Fake voices and fake videos of "the director" are now so convincing that you can no longer tell on a call.
Criminals use AI to copy a manager's voice or face. An employee thinks they're speaking to the real boss and transfers money, or changes a bank account number. You are often the first person to see such a request: an invoice that suddenly shows a different account number, or a voice message asking for an urgent transfer. According to experts, a simple code on your phone and standard security training are no longer enough to stop this.
Background for subscribersNever approve a payment or a changed account number based solely on a voice or video message, no matter how real it sounds. Call back on a number already saved in your own address book, not the number from the message. Agree on a code word with your team for urgent money requests. That way you don't have to wonder in the moment whether a voice is genuine: you simply follow the agreed rule.
