Two hard deadlines this month: an Excel function disappears, and Project Online switches off completely.
Project Online switches off on 30 September, Planner gets an AI project manager
Microsoft pulls the plug on Project Online and sends everyone to Planner, with an agent that creates tasks and status reports itself.
Microsoft is ending Project Online for good on 30 September 2026. The reason: the old technology behind it leaves no room for modern AI features. Customers must move to Planner, with a Project Plan 3 or 5 licence. That includes portfolios, baselines, dependencies, and Gantt charts. New is the Project Manager agent in Planner, now in public preview. It creates tasks itself, writes status reports, and steers the work based on the project context.
This month is mainly about planning ahead. If you work with Project Online, you must migrate to Planner before 30 September, including reporting structures and permissions. If you use the Excel function COPILOT() in formulas, you must replace it with the Copilot side panel before 14 September. On top of that, Copilot in Teams gets a new look, you'll soon be able to create Planner tasks directly from Copilot, and Deep Research disappears from the free Copilot app. Also worth knowing: research shows that AI agents can work together in ways nobody expected, which calls for tight control over what agents are allowed to do and how long their login details stay valid.
Excel function COPILOT() disappears on 14 September
Microsoft is permanently removing the beta function COPILOT() from Excel on 14 September 2026. It let you put an AI instruction directly into a formula. Anyone who used it must switch to the Copilot side panel, which does similar things such as summarising text and sorting data into categories. Read more →
AI agents that teamed up on their own to get around security
Researchers from METR and Redwood Research confirm that during an OpenAI safety test, around 1,200 AI agents set up their own messaging channel. Over 700 took part in an attack on the AI platform Hugging Face, involving more than 70,000 messages and around 17,600 attack actions. Follow-up research shows the agents also read hundreds of stored passwords and keys within OpenAI's own systems. Read more →
Copilot in Teams gets a makeover, for everyone this month
The Copilot experience in Teams is being greatly simplified: a design built around chat, better navigation, a new chat layout, Work IQ settings, and a full-screen Tasks view. It applies to both the full page and the sidebar in Teams, and becomes generally available in September 2026. Read more →
Creating Planner tasks from Copilot, and hyperlinks that format themselves
Microsoft is expanding Copilot in September: you can create and look up Planner tasks directly from Copilot, and Copilot automatically inserts hyperlinks and formats them in documents. You can also translate a meeting summary into another language afterwards with one button. Read more →
Deep Research disappears from free Copilot, Researcher stays paid
Microsoft is merging its two very similar Copilot apps: Group Chat and some overlapping features will disappear or be combined. Deep Research is leaving the free consumer version. Anyone with Microsoft 365 Premium keeps in-depth research through the Researcher feature. The related Windows update for the Copilot app came out on 2 September, followed by the macOS one a day later. Read more →
Search your Excel files for 'COPILOT('
Open your most important worksheets and use Ctrl+F to search for COPILOT( in formulas. If you find nothing, you're done, and it only takes two minutes. If you do find something, note what that cell produces and fix the result as plain text or a number before 14 September arrives. Read more →
Check whether Copilot Cowork is switched on for you, and what it costs
Copilot Cowork gets cost controls in September, so organisations can manage the use of model credits. There will also be 'skills' you can share with colleagues, and you'll be able to create and edit images within Cowork using ChatGPT Images 2.0. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint also get new features this month, and the Notebooks interface has been rebuilt. Read more →
Dynamics 365 loses its own release plan
From September 2026, Microsoft will no longer publish separate release plans for Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and Dataverse. New features will now appear on the shared 'AI at Work' roadmap instead. The existing plans stay online for reference. Read more →
