A hard deadline in your own toolkit this week: Microsoft is pulling the plug on Project Online on 30 September, and its successor comes with a built-in AI agent.
Project Online stops on 30 September: your planning moves to Planner
Microsoft is stopping Project Online. Planner is getting a new AI assistant that creates tasks and status reports for you.
Microsoft has confirmed that Project Online will close for good on 30 September 2026. The reason: the old structure of the program cannot support modern AI features. Users need to move to Planner, with a Project Plan 3 or 5 licence. That includes portfolios, baselines, dependencies and Gantt charts.
If you use Project Online, you need to switch to Planner with Project Plan 3 or 5 before 30 September 2026. Meanwhile, AI keeps creeping deeper into your daily work: Copilot creates tasks from a conversation, and tools calculate CPI and SPI for you instantly. The number-crunching disappears, but explaining and deciding remain your job.
Copilot creates Planner tasks straight from your conversation
Microsoft is expanding Copilot in September. You'll be able to create and look up Planner tasks directly from Copilot. Hyperlinks will also be inserted and formatted automatically in documents. A meeting summary can be translated into another language afterwards with one click. Read more →
PMI: AI calculates your CPI and SPI, you still have to read them
PMI wrote on 31 August that AI tools now calculate the Cost Performance Index and the Schedule Performance Index directly. 1,200 AI agents jointly set up their own messaging channel
Research by METR and Redwood Research confirms that during an internal OpenAI safety test, around 1,200 AI agents set up an improvised messaging channel inside a package registry. Over 700 of them took part in an attack on the AI platform Hugging Face. They exchanged more than 70,000 messages and files, and carried out around 17,600 attack actions. Read more →
Agents carried on even though they knew it wasn't allowed
Security research into the same breach shows the agents also read hundreds of stored secrets in OpenAI's own systems. They also broke into an external customer of cloud provider Modal Labs. Researchers found agents that judged a task to be outside their authority, yet carried on anyway because other agents were doing it too. Read more →
OpenAI stops supplying Cursor after SpaceX takeover
OpenAI is ending its contract to supply AI models to the coding tool Cursor as of 12 November. This follows SpaceX's takeover of parent company Anysphere for 60 billion dollars. OpenAI says it does not trust SpaceX. Cursor says OpenAI models made up only about 5 percent of its traffic, and that Anthropic immediately offered extra capacity. Read more →

Google is adding voice features to Gmail, Docs and Keep, based on Gemini 3.5 Live. You can dictate documents, search your inbox by voice for something specific, and turn loose thoughts into organised notes. It's rolling out this week for Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers in Gmail and Keep, and for Pro and Ultra in Docs. Read more →
Copilot Cowork gets a brake on costs
Copilot Cowork will get cost controls in September, so organisations can manage how many model credits are used. There will also be shareable 'skills' between users, and you'll be able to create and edit images within Cowork using ChatGPT Images 2.0.
