What is AI detector?

An AI detector is a tool that tries to guess whether a text or image was made by AI; it is not reliable.

AI detectors promise to recognize whether something was made by AI. In practice they are often wrong: they flag real human writing as AI and miss real AI text. An innocent text can easily be labeled 'made by AI' by mistake. That is why detectors are advised against as hard proof, for instance in education.

What this means for you

Never lean on a detector for an important judgment about a person. The result is a guess, not proof.

Put precisely

A detector gives a probability, not proof. They regularly raise false alarms, including for people writing in a second language.

Common misconception

That a high score proves someone used AI. You cannot conclude that from it.
