What is AI? Explained in plain language

Sample lesson from the Office management Learning curve, "What AI really is, for your work".

What is AI?

AI: a computer program that learns patterns from examples, instead of following rules that a person typed in exactly.

Read the glossary explanation →

AI is not a person, and not a colleague who knows your office. It is software that has learned from a huge number of examples: millions of emails, documents and conversations. The newest models often work through a question in steps before they answer. Many tools can also look things up on the internet. But they do not know by themselves how things work at your place, or whether something is still right. That is why it can take a lot of work off your hands, and also why it can get things badly wrong now and then.

Tip · try it yourself

Think of one task this week that you mostly do on routine and feel: writing a polite email, tidying up a report. That is exactly where AI can help you, but always with your own eyes over it afterwards.
