Edition 202636 · Tuesday 1 September 2026 · Clarity since 2026

This week focuses on the new global standard for AI in project work, plus hard figures on what AI does to your chances of success.

The main story

There is now a global standard for AI in projects: eight rules to follow

For the first time, the Project Management Institute gives you a framework for using AI responsibly in your project work.

The Project Management Institute (PMI) published the first global standard for AI in portfolio, programme, and project work on 9 June 2026. The standard contains eight guiding principles, five performance domains, and a framework for the full lifecycle. It works independently of whichever tool you use, and it takes the EU AI Act and the ISO 42001 standard into account. PMI members can download it for free.

What this means for you
Use the new PMI standard to justify AI use internally

The PMI standard gives you eight principles and five performance domains to describe and justify AI use in your project. That is directly useful when you need to explain to a steering group or client how you are using AI responsibly. The Pulse of the Profession 2025 figures (25 to 35 per cent higher success rates) give you extra ammunition for that conversation, but use them as a conversation starter, not as a guarantee. Also check whether the tools you use truly work independently: Fosway shows that 73 per cent of so-called AI agents do not. And if you use AI that assesses or selects people, you fall under the high-risk category of the EU AI Act, which means you as the user share responsibility.

AI increases project success rates by 25 to 35 per cent, according to PMI

PMI's Pulse of the Profession 2025 shows that organisations using AI in project management report 25 to 35 per cent higher success rates. Of those organisations, 61 per cent deliver projects on time, compared with 47 per cent for those not using AI. In addition, 64 per cent achieve the expected returns, against 52 per cent among non-AI users.
