Copilot is taking on more work in project tools. For example, Planner Agent carries out tasks itself in Planner. It is still important to check the work before AI suggestions become part of a project plan.

Check AI suggestions before they go into Planner

Copilot creates reports and updates tasks. AI changes are first saved as drafts.

Microsoft's Planner Agent is now available for basic and premium plans. An AI agent carries out tasks itself, rather than only giving answers. You do need a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence for this. The agent automatically creates status reports from plans. Through Copilot, you can also change task names, statuses, due dates and priorities.

Plans, tasks and updates created by the AI are first saved as drafts. You can edit and approve them. Only then do they become part of the plan. This creates a point of review between what the AI produces and the project plan. A plan picker and a goals bucket were added when the agent became widely available. The plan picker is a menu for choosing the right plan. In the goals bucket, you organise tasks around goals.

For project leads, the draft mode is especially important. A draft can look convincing and still contain an error. Approval is only real oversight if you take time for it. This week, you could go through one suggested report or plan change carefully before approving it.

What this means for you
Check AI suggestions before they become project work

These reports show that AI is increasingly creating reports and changing task fields. AI is also combining project information from different sources. Often, you can review a suggestion first. But a draft is not automatically correct. It helps to know which data the AI used and what connected tools are allowed to do. An announced feature or a test feature is not yet a fixed part of your plan.

A stack of information: data

Copilot Notebooks will soon handle recurring project tasks

Copilot Notebooks can create a notebook based on a description of your goal. It fills the notebook with sources from work data and the web. You can also add Markdown, TXT and RTF files as sources. These are types of text file. This option is available to everyone. Frontier offers more. Frontier is a Microsoft programme with extra features that are not yet generally available. There, you can edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files in the notebook. You can also create interactive reports and PDFs, and choose a model. A model is the AI program that does the work. Recurring tasks are coming in the next few weeks. These could include a daily briefing or a weekly status summary. Audio summaries now also use Outlook emails, Teams conversations, and OneNote and Loop pages. If you save them in OneDrive, they take over sensitivity labels. A label shows how confidential information is. This means information from different project channels can come together in one result. Such a report may use more sources than you expect. Want to add one of these features to your plan? Then first check whether your organisation already has it.
