In August 2026, Microsoft 365 Copilot gets new automation in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. You give one instruction and Copilot delivers a full document, a spreadsheet or a presentation, including formatting, charts and visual elements. Behind the scenes, two models are now at work: GPT-5.6 from OpenAI and Claude from Anthropic. Copilot picks the best model for each task.

At the same time, Copilot plans and carries out tasks across multiple apps. In Outlook it helps you improve emails and prepare for meetings. All AI tasks come together in the new Copilot Tasks space, so you can find them again and share them. Bear in mind that Copilot watches your screen and that AI content going outside your organisation must now be clearly labelled.

The August updates turn Copilot into more than a chat window. It becomes a planning layer that organises and carries out a task across different Microsoft 365 apps. This builds on the agent features in Word, Excel and PowerPoint that became widely available in April 2026. Those features carry out multiple steps and deliver an editable end result.
