New study help in ChatGPT and Gemini, free access for students, and a sober warning: AI sometimes makes up whole sources.

The main story

ChatGPT gets a study mode with 70+ topics, just in time for exam week

OpenAI adds 'Interactive Learning': interactive explanations of maths and physics, in the free account.

OpenAI has rolled out 'Interactive Learning' in ChatGPT. It covers more than 70 topics in maths and physics, such as the Pythagorean theorem, the ideal gas law and lens formulas. Instead of just an answer, you get an explanation in small steps. The feature builds on earlier study tools like Study Mode and practice quizzes, and it sits in the free ChatGPT account.

What this means for you
Turn on study mode for the subject you are stuck on right now

Do you have a maths or physics test soon? Open ChatGPT, choose study mode and say: "Quiz me on this topic, give no answers but hints, and only tell me if it is right after I have explained it myself." That way you really remember the material, instead of copying an answer you will have forgotten by tomorrow. The feature sits in the free account, so it costs you nothing.

Google turns NotebookLM into Gemini Notebook

Google has renamed its study tool NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook. The core stays the same: you load in your own material (a reader, notes, a PDF or a YouTube lecture) and the answers come only from that material, with a clickable link to the source. What is new is that each notebook can now also write and run code on your sources.
