Goldman Sachs is taking AI coding tools away from traders and bankers, which raises the question of who in your work is allowed to build with AI.

Goldman Sachs limits AI coding tools to engineers

Goldman Sachs has taken away access to advanced AI coding tools from most of its staff. This includes tools like Anthropic's Claude Code and Microsoft's GitHub. Now only engineers can still use them. Bloomberg reports this, based on internal guidelines from October.

Traders and bankers had used the tools for months. They tracked trading flows and created content. The move is reportedly causing frustration inside the bank.

The contrast with July is big. Back then, CIO Marco Argenti still praised 'vibe coding' by employees without a technical background. A trader or someone in wealth management came up with an idea and used AI to build a quick prototype. Then an engineer took it over. That no longer seems to be the plan.

Spokesperson Nick Carcaterra mentions 'a number of factors, including productivity and risk management'. According to him, the experimenting phase is over. The bank now limits the tools to people who can 'make the best long-term use of them'.

For your work, this is mainly a signal. The report does not mention a new rule or tool for the financial sector. But a large bank that first encouraged the tools and now draws a line shows that free experimenting with AI code will not automatically last.

How to set who is allowed to build with AI

At Goldman Sachs, only engineers can still work with AI coding tools such as Claude Code and GitHub. If someone in your team builds a script or prototype with AI, this is a good reason to agree on who is allowed to do that and who takes it over afterwards. The bank names productivity and risk management as its reasons, so see this as a signal and not as a rule.

Copilot: projects keep an ongoing topic together

A Copilot project contains the chats, tasks, instructions and files that belong together. In Cowork, the part for bigger tasks, projects have existed since October. In November they also come to Copilot Chat. If you work on the same topic for weeks, you keep everything in one place. You then don't have to explain to Copilot every time what it is about. Whether and when you get projects depends on your organization.
