New rules, new tools, and one question on every teacher's mind: what can AI do, and what stays your job?

The AI law takes effect: from 2 August you need to know what you use

The EU AI Act is starting to bite, and education is in the first wave.

From 2 August 2026, Dutch regulators will really enforce the AI law. Two things apply then: schools must keep track of which AI systems they use and for what (Article 4), and anyone who uses a chatbot must make clear that it is AI (Article 50). Software that grades or filters pupils falls under "high risk". The strict requirements for that only apply later, on 2 December 2027, but the duty to know what you use applies now.

What this means for you
Know which AI is in your lesson, and what it does

You do not need to become a lawyer, but one thing becomes concrete: your school must know which AI systems it uses and for what. Using a chatbot for pupils? Then it must be clear that it is AI. Using a tool that filters or grades pupils? That falls under the strict category, with extra requirements later and always a person who can really adjust it. Ask your IT coordinator what is in use at your school, so you do not accidentally step out of line.

AI literacy becomes a duty: keep track of what you use

From 2 August 2026, the regulators will enforce Article 4 of the AI law: schools must know which AI systems they use and for what. The transparency duty also applies then: with a chatbot it must be clear that it is AI. Anyone who uses AI in decisions about staff has an extra documentation duty.
