This week: new AI rules in Europe, smarter tools for your preparation, and why fake messages are getting harder to spot.

The main story

European AI rules take effect on 2 August

From 2 August 2026, new transparency rules for AI apply, also in schools.

On 2 August 2026, the main rules of the EU AI Act take effect. The key point for you: if an AI system talks to people, that must be made clear. There are also new rules for labelling AI content. AI used for recruitment and selection faces extra strict requirements, because it falls under the highest risk category. For existing generative tools, there is time until 2 December 2026.

What this means for you
Be open about AI, and you'll be fine

You don't need to become a lawyer. The common thread in the new rules is transparency: make it clear when something is made with AI or when an AI system is involved. Do you use an AI tool for a worksheet or a letter to parents? Then little changes, as long as you check the content and put your name to it. Pay extra attention with tools that select or judge people, such as in job applications. Not sure if your school's tool meets the rules? Ask your IT coordinator or administrator.

Google's NotebookLM turns loose research into a tidy document

Google is upgrading NotebookLM (now part of Gemini Notebook). The tool can now reason better, combine web sources, and turn them into charts, tables and even a presentation. This way, you turn loose ideas and articles into organised material. The update is available worldwide.
