A new, smarter model now comes as standard in your Copilot
From 9 July, Microsoft Copilot works with GPT-5.6, the newest model, in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Chat and Cowork.
Microsoft has upgraded the model behind Copilot. Since 9 July 2026, GPT-5.6 is the preferred model in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Chat and Cowork. Microsoft and OpenAI fine-tuned it together for office work. There is also a new feature called 'deep citations'. With it, you can check an answer by clicking straight to the source file. Handy, because you can see where Copilot got something from.
Background for subscribersCopilot can say something wrong with full confidence. With the new 'deep citations' you click straight to the source file. Do this especially for numbers, names and agreements. That way you can see for yourself whether the answer really comes from your document, before you copy it into an email or report.
Copilot can now watch along on your screen or camera
Microsoft Copilot has a new feature: Copilot Vision. You share your screen or your phone's camera, and Copilot watches along. Instead of typing out an error message or dashboard, you simply show it and ask questions about it. This works for people with a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence.
