Scammers now use AI to impersonate your boss or client

Fake voices and fake videos are now so real that "just video call to check" is no longer safe.

In 2026, fraud with a cloned voice or video of a boss or client has become a normal business risk. Criminals use this to talk staff into an urgent payment or a changed account number. A short video call is no longer a safe test, because that footage can be faked too. Experts advise extra checks for every payment order, and training on signs like an unnatural voice or scripted talk.

What this means for you
Always call back on a number you look up yourself

Agree one strict rule with yourself and your team: money or sensitive client data never moves on just a phone call or video call alone, however real it seems. Do you get an urgent request from "a client" or "the boss"? Call back on a number from your CRM or the Chamber of Commerce, not the number they gave you. Mobile scams via WhatsApp and text are also rising, and those messages are more convincing than ever. A healthy dose of doubt about an unexpected, too-good-to-be-true message is now your best defence.

Mobile fraud via WhatsApp and text messages is rising

The SANS Institute warns that your phone will become the main target of AI fraud in 2026. Attackers use AI to create personal phishing messages on a large scale, and send them at once via text, WhatsApp, and social media. The messages are more convincing than ever.
