HR edition
This week: the AI rules are getting close, new help in the tools you already use, and why "it looked real" is no longer proof.
EU AI rules start real enforcement from 2 August 2026
Recruitment and assessment fall under the strictest category. For HR, this is the one deadline to know this year.
On 2 August 2026, the main rules of the EU AI Act really start to apply, with regulators checking compliance. AI systems for recruitment, credit scoring, education and healthcare count as "high risk". This means mandatory risk assessments, human oversight and technical documentation. Fines can reach 35 million euros or 7% of global annual turnover. For existing systems, some deadlines have been moved to December 2026, following an agreement reached on 7 May 2026.
Background for subscribersBefore 2 August, go through your process: which tools in recruitment, selection and assessment actually use AI, and what do they do? Think of CV filtering, scoring or proctoring. Ask your suppliers for that explanation in writing. Make sure a human decides at every step that affects a person, not the tool. Then you'll be well prepared if a rejected candidate or the works council asks about it.
Schools and healthcare are also high-risk sectors: same deadline
AI for admissions, assessment and surveillance in education counts explicitly as high risk, just like AI in HR and healthcare. Schools, vocational colleges and universities must have their AI tool inventory in order before 2 August 2026. Healthcare organisations using high-risk AI must register it in the European database by that date.
