This week, rules that affect you directly: Europe starts enforcing, a German court raps Google's knuckles, and more tools appear that show their sources.
EU AI Act: enforcement starts on 2 August 2026
From early August, the main rules apply, with real regulators and heavy fines.
On 2 August 2026, the main rules of the EU AI Act take effect. National regulators will then start active enforcement. There will be transparency duties (Article 50) and strict requirements for high-risk systems, for example in recruitment, credit assessment, education and healthcare. These requirements include a mandatory risk assessment, human oversight and technical documentation. Fines can reach up to 35 million euros or 7% of global annual turnover. Under the Digital Omnibus agreement of 7 May 2026, some deadlines for existing systems have shifted to December 2026.
Background for subscribersThis is not a distant story for you. Schools, vocational colleges (ROCs) and universities must have their AI tool inventory in order before 2 August 2026, think of proctoring, plagiarism checkers and learning analytics. Healthcare organisations using high-risk AI must register it by that date in the European database for high-risk AI systems. Do you work for, or advise, such an organisation? Then map out now which AI systems are in use and which risk category they fall into. Remember: this newsletter helps you stay informed, but it does not earn you training credits. You only earn those through recognised courses.
Munich court: Google liable for incorrect AI overviews
The Munich court ruled that Google is liable for incorrect statements in its AI overviews (AI Overviews). Two German publishers were wrongly linked to fraud in them. According to the court, Google is not a passive conduit but an active publisher that structures information via AI and draws its own conclusions. This means Google cannot rely on the liability exemption in the Digital Services Act.
