This week: new rules that affect your profession, AI photos with a limit, and why you always stay in charge.
The EU AI Act is coming: 2 August 2026 is the date to remember
From 2 August 2026, the main rules of the European AI Act really start to apply, and the fines are steep.
On 2 August 2026, the main rules of the EU AI Act come into force. From then on, transparency duties apply and national regulators keep active watch. For some high-risk uses, such as AI that selects or judges people, stricter rules apply, like risk checks and human oversight. Fines can reach 35 million euros or 7 percent of global annual turnover.
Background for subscribersDo you use AI to virtually furnish an empty room or brighten up a photo? Clearly state that it's an AI impression. From 2026, the AI Act requires that AI-generated images are recognisable as such. And never let AI select tenants or buyers for you: that falls under the strictest rules and automates discrimination. Select using objective criteria that you set in advance, and keep the decision in your own hands.
The Netherlands is deciding who will oversee the AI rules
The government has put forward a bill for consultation that sets out which national regulators will monitor compliance with the EU AI Act. Think of the privacy watchdog AP and the competition authority ACM. This means you'll soon know who to turn to if you use AI and something goes wrong.
